Picked this up because it is protein/cone free, has the added bonus of being humectant free as well (as of July 2012). No polyquats either.
I tried it first on sopping wet hair still in the shower, right after my leave-in. The consistency is really strange, basically jello. So a lot slipped out of my hands and onto the tub floor, and I really had to scrunch to make sure it mixed well. Not unpleasant, just very different and kind of fun. Instructions say to "Work a small amount through hair and style as desired. Excellent on damp or dry hair". I used a bit more than a small amount since I have coarser hair.
I'm not sure but I wouldn't be surprised if it lengthened drying time. The hold wasn't that great and I could see the tips of my wurls separating, but when it dried I had very nice definition and no need to SOTC. Felt like ecostyler a bit in function.
Slept on it and woke up with it surprisingly intact but frizzy, so decided to test the second part of this. Normally, gels on dry hair for me are approximately the worst thing ever. I hate the feel, they hate my hair, it is a bad thing. This worked surprisingly well though. Got my hands wet, scooped up a fair amount, squished and watched as some escaped to the sink, and scrunched in. Put a little more in, and then did a little bit over the canopy. In this case I do have a little crunch to scrunch but it's not bad at all. Some pieces clearly got too much and are extra-crispy.
It has a strong but not unpleasant smell. It's not pleasant either, it just smells like hair product.
Good for the price -- I got it for 5.99 but I think normally it's 7.99.
