Coconut Oil (all brands)

It can be found in the cooking section of health food stores, grocery stores, and online.

I have used both refined and unrefined (Spectrum brand) coconut oil in my hair. If you've never purchased coconut oil before, you should know that it is solid at room temperature, but that it melts quickly in your hand. Its melting point is 76ºF. Refined coconut oil has no scent, but unrefined smells very sweet and coconuty.

I only use Coconut Oil as a pre-cleansing conditioner. It is pretty heavy and difficult to wash out of my hair. For my hair, it requires a vigorous sulfate-free shampooing to remove it, but it leaves my hair very shiny and conditioned. I'd probably rate it about an 8 out of 10. As my hair is very healthy and low porous, my hair doesn't absorb the oil much. If you have porous hair, you may experience a more dramatic conditioning effect. And as someone who is at least mildly protein-sensitive, this does not give me any trouble.

I personally would not use it as a leave-in or a styling product. It would weigh down my hair and make my hair feel gunky.

  2. My hair is 2c, fine, medium density, normal porosity, low elasticity.
Unrefined coconut oil is another HG product for my hair. I smear some through my dry hair, leave it on for a couple of hours and then wash it out using a low-poo. It leaves my hair so super shiny and virtually frizz-free. I have no problems washing it out, and my hair never feels greasy after washing. My hair loves coconut oil!

Unrefined Coconut oil is a miracle for my hair. I use it as a pre-poo, smooth/rake in enough to look mildly greasy and leave it for a couple hours to over night. I have no problem co-washing it out since my hair absorbs most of it anyway. This along with protein treatments really improved my extremely dry hair!
I also mix this with honey and a thick condish (like GVP conditioning balm) for deep treatments. I add it to my homemade FSG. I use it in the gelatin protein treatment. I seal wet hair after applying my leave in with it (a few drops rubbed between palms and smoothed over hair). I use it to scrunch out the crunch of my gel, it acts like a frizz serum when I use it that way.
I really recommend the unrefined oil for use in hair. It just seems less greasy than the refined stuff. However, the refined coconut oil is an excellent skin oil. I use it every time I get out of the shower to seal in moisture on my skin. I also use it on dry lips, dry hands, etc.

No one could have convinced me that this would work for my hair, but it makes an excellent pre-poo treatment that increases shine, manageability and strongly reduced frizz. Go figure!

  5. I purchase the refined KTC brand which is cheap in Tesco and Asian supermarkets here in the UK. My hair is 2a-c, porous/ colour treated, medium texture.

I either use several tablespoonsful straight up on clean dry or damp hair or melt and blend with a cheap conditioner, add a shower cap and microfibre towel turban to trap the heat of my head and sleep on it. Coconut oil removes easily with plenty of conditioner - I use Inecto - no need to shampoo and strip my skin and hair.

Leaves my hair glossy, bouncy, soft, helps my curls form better/ more defined, not weighed down. Coconut oil is hopefully reducing porosity and protecting from future damage and structural protein loss (see linky). I don't find it strips my colour significantly.
